Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

At Institut Mèdic Especialitzat La Ràpita we offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment within our Orthopaedics clinic, for patients from La Ràpita, Amposta, Tortosa, Deltebre and the wider Terres de l'Ebre area. PRP uses growth factors from the patient's own blood and is used, among other indications, for tendon problems, muscle injuries and some cases of osteoarthritis. It is not suitable for every patient or every injury.

What is platelet-rich plasma?

PRP is obtained from a sample of the patient's own blood, which is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and the growth factors they contain. The concentrate is then injected into the injured area, with the aim of harnessing repair mechanisms the body already uses.

PRP is used in several specialties; at IME it is used within the Orthopaedics clinic for musculoskeletal injuries.

Which injuries may it be used for?

  • Tendon problems, such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) or patellar tendinopathy.
  • Some cases of mild or moderate osteoarthritis of the knee, hip or shoulder, to help control symptoms.
  • Muscle injuries, such as muscle tears, during recovery.
  • Supporting recovery after orthopaedic surgery, as part of a wider rehabilitation plan.

Whether it is appropriate always depends on an individual assessment by the orthopaedic surgeon: PRP does not replace a diagnosis or other treatments when those are more suitable.

When it is not recommended

Situations in which the specialist may advise against it include certain clotting disorders, active infection in the area to be treated and some ongoing medication. The initial assessment is precisely to find out whether you are a good candidate.

What the procedure involves at IME

  • Assessment by the orthopaedic surgeon, who confirms whether PRP is a suitable option.
  • A blood sample is taken, similar to a routine blood test.
  • The sample is centrifuged to concentrate the platelet-rich plasma.
  • The concentrate is injected into the area being treated.
  • Advice on recovery and physical activity for the following days.

What to expect: results and timing

The response to PRP varies from person to person and depends on the injury, how long you have had it and your general health. When it works, improvement is usually gradual over the following weeks and continues for several months. Your specialist will tell you what is reasonable to expect in your case: we do not quote generic "success rates", because no medical treatment can guarantee a result.

Frequently asked questions

Does PRP treatment hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic at the injection site. You may have mild discomfort for a few hours afterwards, similar to other injections.

How many sessions are needed?

It depends on the indication. It is decided at the consultation and may be a single session or several, spaced out over time.

Will my health insurance cover it?

It depends on each insurer and policy. Ask us when you book and we will check it with you.

Are there risks or side effects?

Because it uses your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction or rejection is low, but like any injection it carries procedure-related risks (local pain, bruising), which the specialist will explain beforehand.
